  • The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced an increase in the prize money for the 2024-2025 season to N200 million
  • The NPFL Board Chairman revealed that the best player and best coach of the season will each receive N1 million to encourage performance and retain talent

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced an increase in the prize money for the forthcoming 2024-2025 season, raising it to N200 million. This decision was made during the league’s annual general meeting, which involved the NPFL board and all 20 clubs, held in Lagos on Tuesday, July 16.

The 2023-2024 NPFL campaign winners, Enugu Rangers, received N150 million in prize money. The Chairman of the NPFL board, Gbenga Elegbeleye, informed reporters that an additional N50 million has been added to the prize money for the upcoming season.

Elegbeleye also revealed that the best player and coach of the season will each receive N1 million at the end of the league campaign. This initiative aims to encourage players and coaches to give their best performance and to reduce the rate of Nigerian players leaving for smaller countries in search of better opportunities.

“When we came on board, we discovered that the prize money for the league winner was N50 million, which they never received. We promised to increase it and paid N100 million in our first and N150 million last season,” said the NPFL Board Chairman.

“Next season, the winner will receive N200 million, and the awards of N1 million each to the best player and coach are to encourage them. We want Nigeria’s football system to have a new look, to instil confidence in our league, and to inject more money so that players will not have to go to smaller countries to find clubs to play for.

“We want them to stay here so that our best talents will be retained, and we can have more players in the Super Eagles coming from the league,” he added.
