The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen, has made a heartfelt plea to those planning the nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, August 1st, 2024, urging them to reconsider in the interest of the nation and its citizens.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, on Tuesday, Abbas acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to address the frustrations and needs of Nigerian youths.
Addressing the nation, Abbas said, “I speak to you today with a heart full of empathy and a deep sense of duty. We are living through challenging times, and I want to acknowledge the difficulties many of you, especially our youth, face. The economic pressures, social uncertainties, and other related concerns weigh heavily on our nation.”
He emphasized that the government knows the youths’ calls for change and a better Nigeria, stating, “Your frustrations and reservations are not lost on us. We hear your cries for change for a better and more equitable Nigeria. I want to assure you that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR takes these concerns with the utmost seriousness. We are committed to listening, engaging, and working with you to find sustainable solutions to the issues that confront us.”
Abbas highlighted several government initiatives to support the youth, including introducing student loans to alleviate educational expenses and various schemes designed to support young entrepreneurs through the Consumer Credit Scheme. He also mentioned focusing on job creation and skills development programs to enhance employability and create sustainable livelihoods.
“The Tinubu-led administration has made significant strides in providing young entrepreneurs with funds through various schemes, such as the Consumer Credit Scheme, designed to support innovation and enterprise. In addition, we are focusing on job creation and skills development. Programs aimed at enhancing employability and creating sustainable livelihoods are being prioritized,” he stated.
The Speaker also pointed out the House of Representatives’ efforts to develop legislative mechanisms for continuous engagement and dialogue with the youth, ensuring their voices are heard and considered in national decision-making.
“We believe that your voices must be heard, and we are creating platforms for regular interaction to build consensus on the way forward,” Abbas said.
He urged the youth to remember that nation-building is a collective task and to embrace dialogue over violence. “Your right to protest is acknowledged and respected. Let us use legitimate avenues to express our grievances and work together towards constructive solutions.”
In conclusion, Abbas appealed for patience and cooperation, assuring that the government remains committed to addressing the pressing issues affecting the youth and working towards a better future for all Nigerians.
