  • The Labour Party has appealed to the Supreme Court to cancel the 2023 Imo governorship election due to alleged over-voting
  • The party claims the total votes counted exceeded the certified number of accredited voters by over 200,000, violating electoral laws

The Labour Party (LP) has appealed to the Supreme Court to annul the 2023 Imo State Governorship election and order a fresh poll. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made the demand during a press conference in Abuja, citing significant over-voting as the basis for their request.

Ifoh claimed that the total votes counted—exceeding 700,000—were much higher than the certified number of accredited voters, which was just over 500,000, resulting in a discrepancy of over 200,000 votes. He argued that this over-voting contravenes Section 53 of the Electoral Act 2010, which requires the cancellation of elections affected by such inconsistencies.

He emphasized that ignoring this issue could erode public trust and set a dangerous precedent for the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. The Labour Party, led by Senator Athan Achonu, is urging the Supreme Court to address the alleged injustice and ensure fairness and transparency prevail in the governance of Imo State.
