  • Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun revealed that a key figure from the Sudan crisis organized the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria
  • Egbetokun clarified that the police targeted an individual involved in inciting unrest, not the Nigeria Labour Congress headquarters during the operation

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, revealed on Monday that a key figure involved in the crisis destabilising Sudan was among those organising the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.

Speaking at a Youth Summit in Abuja, Egbetokun clarified that the police did not raid the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as reported but rather targeted an office within the building used by the foreigner. The IGP stated that the raid was not directed at labour leaders but at the individual hiding in the Labour House in Abuja.

Egbetokun explained that the foreigner, believed to be one of the masterminds behind the Sudan crisis, was in Nigeria attempting to incite unrest. Although the suspect escaped, valuable documents related to his activities were recovered.

The IGP also emphasized that the police’s approach to protests is shaped by intelligence reports and past experiences, particularly the violent turn of the #EndSARS protests in 2020. He noted that protests mobilized via social media have the potential to become violent as they attract a wide range of participants, including criminals.

Egbetokun assured that the police would continue to monitor and respond to threats of destabilization, emphasizing the need for caution in handling protests that could jeopardize national security.

Earlier in the summit, former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University Olanrewaju Fagbohun urged the federal government to actively engage with the youth on the country’s current challenges.
