Vice-President Kashim Shettima praised President Bola Tinubu for his modesty, emphasizing that Tinubu is more focused on improving the nation than on personal extravagance.
Shettima, speaking at a recent event, remarked that while his own house in Maiduguri, Borno State, is more luxurious than Tinubu’s residence in Bourdillon, Ikoyi, Lagos, the President’s priorities are clear. He recalled a visit where, despite an array of meals being offered, Tinubu chose to eat garri and groundnut.
“In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have a leader in whom we can trust. I’m not playing politics here; I’m speaking from the heart. I’ve seen the soul of Bola Tinubu, and he has a good soul,” Shettima said.
He continued, “He genuinely wants to improve the country. He’s not in power for personal gain but to leave a lasting legacy. Despite being one of the most criticized politicians in Nigeria, his lifestyle is surprisingly simple. When I first visited his house in Bourdillon, I expected something grand, like Buckingham Palace, but nothing was extraordinary. My house in Maiduguri is better.”
Shettima also pointed out Tinubu’s consistency in his habits. “Since I’ve known him, he’s only ever worn one wristwatch, and I dress better than him. He’s not concerned with appearances. We need to support this man who has made bold decisions, even though the economy we inherited was in a dire state.”
Acknowledging the challenges inherited from the previous administration, of which he was a part, Shettima emphasized the importance of focusing on solutions rather than assigning blame. He dismissed criticisms from political opponents, noting that they even advocated for removing fuel subsidies.
Shettima expressed optimism about the future, noting that the economy is now on a path to recovery. “The President has shown immense courage in making tough decisions, and while there’s been pain, much like childbirth, the results will eventually bring celebration. I believe history will be kind to him.”
He highlighted the recent progress, including an increase in oil exports and the stabilization of the Naira, while acknowledging that global and local challenges remain, particularly in food security. However, he assured that security issues in key agricultural regions are being addressed, and significant improvements in the nation’s fortunes are on the horizon.
The Vice-President urged Nigerians to rally around Tinubu, who, in his words, “has taken far-reaching decisions for the country’s good.”
The comments were made at a book launch for “Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria,” authored by Prof. Modupe Adelabu, a retired professor of Educational Administration at Obafemi Awolowo University. Several prominent figures attended the event, including Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Pius Akinyelure, and Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President.
