Nigerian Politicians Will Someday Act Like Biden – Laolu Akande

  • Laolu Akande hopes Nigerian politicians will emulate Biden’s selflessness, urging leaders to prioritize national interests over personal ambitions
  • Akande emphasizes the need for public interest advocacy in Nigeria, envisioning a future where leaders prioritize the country’s well-being

Laolu Akande, a veteran journalist and former presidential aide, recently expressed hope that Nigerian politicians would one day display the same selflessness as US President Joe Biden. His comments came after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, citing the best interests of his party and the country as his reasons.

On July 21, President Biden made headlines by stepping down as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. In a move that surprised many, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new nominee for the 2024 elections. Biden’s decision, widely praised in the United States, was seen as putting the nation and party above personal ambition.

Reflecting on this development, Akande tweeted, “Now imagine a day in Nigeria when our politicians would get to the point that a sitting president would restrain from a second term just in the interest of their party and the country.” He praised Biden’s actions as a model of selflessness and urged Nigerian politicians to emulate such behaviour.

He continued, “It is my fervent prayer that such a day will come in Nigeria, and we are working at it with our public interest advocacy.” Akande’s message highlights his optimism and dedication to promoting a political culture in Nigeria that prioritizes the greater good over individual ambitions.

Akande’s reflections are not just wishful thinking but a call to action. He emphasized the importance of public interest advocacy and collective effort in bringing about this change in Nigeria. While acknowledging the challenges, Akande remained hopeful that this vision for Nigerian politics is achievable.

He also encouraged Nigerians to stay informed and engaged with global developments, particularly those in the United States. His reference to Kamala Harris suggests his belief in her potential leadership and the inspiration it could provide for Nigerian politicians and citizens alike.

Akande’s message is a powerful reminder that real change starts with the willingness to imagine a better future and the commitment to work towards it. He sees a future where Nigerian leaders prioritize the nation’s interests and are celebrated for their sacrifices rather than clinging to power.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s political history, Akande’s message contrasts past events, such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s failed “Third Term Agenda” in 2006, when an attempt was made to amend the constitution to allow him to stay in power beyond the two terms allowed. This comparison underscores the need for a shift in Nigeria’s political culture.
