  • Otunba Segun Showunmi warns that the PDP’s reconciliation efforts may worsen without honesty and sincerity, stressing the need for genuine engagement
  • Showunmi attributes the PDP’s internal divisions to a lack of discipline, urging members to prioritize the party’s interests over personal grievances

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a member of the National Reconciliatory Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has warned that the party’s ongoing reconciliation efforts may result in a worse outcome if not approached with honesty, sincerity, and common sense. Showunmi, a former governorship aspirant in Ogun State, is part of a 25-member committee led by former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

In a statement titled “PDP Reconciliation Committee, My Reflections,” Showunmi emphasized the importance of genuine efforts in the reconciliation process, cautioning that any insincerity could lead to further divisions within the party. He reflected on the PDP’s defeat in the 2023 elections, describing it as a self-inflicted injury that could have been avoided if party leaders had allowed the party’s supremacy to guide their actions.

Showunmi pointed out that the party had undertaken a similar reconciliation effort before the 2023 elections, led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki. He praised the thoroughness of Saraki’s committee and the fairness of its recommendations but questioned why the party still ended up divided.

He further stated that the PDP’s problems stem from a lack of discipline and a failure to prioritize the party’s interests over personal grievances. He warned against the “messiah complex” among some members and urged for compromises, apologies, and even punishments where necessary in the new reconciliation drive.

Showunmi concluded by urging all party members to be open and honest during the reconciliation process. He stressed the need for a new, united PDP to emerge from the current struggles and expressed hope that the party can overcome its challenges and continue to move forward.
