  • Experienced Swedish coach Janne Andersson confirms talks with NFF over vacant Super Eagles coaching job, but nothing finalized yet
  • The 61-year-old Andersson became available after stepping down as Sweden coach in November 2023 following failure to qualify for Euro 2024

Experienced Swedish coach Janne Andersson has confirmed that he is discussing the vacant Super Eagles coaching position with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). However, he emphasized that nothing has been finalized.

The 61-year-old Andersson became available after stepping down as Sweden’s coach in November 2023, following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.

The Super Eagles coaching position became vacant after Finidi George resigned following disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin. In response, the NFF’s Executive Committee hired a foreign Technical Adviser to lead the team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the remaining World Cup qualifying matches.

Despite rumors linking Andersson to the role, the NFF clarified earlier this week that no official appointment has been made.

Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Andersson said, “It’s a huge footballing nation. I can confirm that I have had a dialogue with the Nigeria Football Federation. I’m extremely flattered to be in the running to be their next national team coach. Dialogue is ongoing, and I don’t really want to say more than that. I’ve been in this industry for so long and know that things can happen differently. So, we’ll see what happens in the future.”
