  • Dino Melaye predicts the imminent collapse of the PDP, blaming party leaders for commercializing and privatizing the party’s operations
  • Reports suggest potential sanctions for PDP leaders Damagum and Anyanwu over a controversial letter seen as anti-party activity amid ongoing crisis

The internal crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) took a dramatic turn on Saturday as former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, predicted the party’s imminent collapse. Melaye blamed the party’s acting national chairman, Iliya Damagum, its national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and national organizing secretary, Umar Bature, for its downfall.

In a post on X, the former senator accused the PDP leadership of commercializing and privatizing the party, stating, “End of the road for PDP as Damagum, Bature, and Anyanwu irredeemably destroyed the party. We will talk about the commercialisation and privatisation of PDP. PDP is now once upon a time.”

Reports suggest that the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) might consider sanctioning Damagum and Anyanwu for allegedly sending a controversial letter to the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt regarding the ongoing crisis within the party. Some party leaders, including members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), have perceived the letter as an act of anti-party activity, leading to calls for disciplinary action against the two leaders.

However, Damagum dismissed calls for his resignation on Thursday, asserting that such demands only increase his popularity. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees, the acting chairman criticized those spreading misinformation about the NWC’s operations, saying, “Let me send a message to everyone talking about Damagum this, Damagum that—I cannot be intimidated. The more you mention me, the more popular I become.”
