The Nigeria Police Force has detained 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ite group, following a violent clash in Abuja on Sunday. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of two police officers, with three others sustaining serious injuries. Additionally, three police patrol vehicles were set ablaze during the incident.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the arrests were made based on credible intelligence reports. The detained individuals are expected to face prosecution.
Inspector-General of Police (I-G) Kayode Egbetokun has reiterated the force’s commitment to apprehending all those involved in the attack and ensuring they are brought to justice. He emphasized that the police would not tolerate any form of anarchy or unrest in the country and would continue to uphold law and order.
Adejobi described the killings of the police officers as “outrageous and unacceptable,” stating that those responsible had “murdered peace.” He also expressed the I-G’s condolences to the fallen officers’ families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The police urged the public to support their efforts in maintaining peace and security, particularly in the face of extremist threats and other violent crimes.
