  • Three persons were seriously injured while two others escaped unhurt
  • The Ondo Sector Commander identified over speeding as a major cause of accidents on Nigeria roads.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo, has disclosed a fatal crash on the Ore-Ondo highway, claiming the lives of 16 individuals.

In addition to the fatalities, three people sustained injuries in the Monday night accident, according to the agency.

In a statement on Wednesday, Samuel Ibitoye, the command’s public relations officer, revealed that the collision occurred between a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck at the Ajue community along the Ore-Ondo highway.

Ibitoye attributed the crash to reckless driving, specifically citing dangerous overtaking maneuvers and speeding, which resulted in a direct impact between the two vehicles.

“The accident happened at 8pm on Monday night and the rescue operation ended at 11pm,” Ibitoye said.

“The accident involved a Toyota Hiace and a truck, with two other passengers who escaped the tragedy.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the cause of the incident to over speeding and wrongful overtaking which unfortunately led to a head collision.

“Investigations on what led to the accident has not been concluded.”

Samuel Ibitoye emphasized the importance of prudent driving practices, urging motorists to adopt a safety-first approach.

He also noted that reckless speeding is a leading factor in the alarming rate of road crashes in Nigeria.

In March, the Federal Road Safety Corps launched a targeted crackdown on unsafe driving habits, instructing top officials to ramp up enforcement against vehicle overloading and nocturnal journeys.

This move aims to bolster road safety measures and decrease the frequency of accidents.
