The Nigerian Police Force has condemned the practice of backdating firearms licenses, declaring such documents as fraudulent.
Speaking at a joint briefing organized by the Office of the National Security Adviser, Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi stressed that all backdated licenses are illegal and urged Nigerians not to be deceived by dubious arms dealers.
Adejobi reiterated that the ban on firearms licenses, issued in August 2023, remains in effect due to the alarming rate of illegal arms proliferation. He warned that the possession of arms is currently a criminal offense, punishable by law, and the police would intensify efforts to apprehend those holding illegal firearms.
Addressing recent allegations of subversion, Adejobi confirmed that British national Andrew Wynne and Nigerian national Lucky Obiyan remain wanted for attempting to overthrow the government. The police are working with the Nigeria Immigration Service to verify Wynne’s immigration status while reaffirming their commitment to preventing foreign interference in Nigeria’s security.
The police vowed to continue cracking down on illegal arms possession and activities aimed at destabilizing the country, warning that financing or sponsoring terrorism would not be tolerated.
