The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has vehemently criticized the arrest of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), describing it as a flagrant assault on his fundamental rights.
According to Benson Upah, NLC spokesperson, Ajaero was “whisked away” by DSS agents on his way to the United Kingdom, where he was scheduled to attend a meeting with the British TUC.
Festus Osifo, TUC President, condemned the arrest, stating that it constitutes an “unjust action that represents a clear violation of the rights to freedom of association and expression, fundamental pillars in any democratic society.”
The TUC expressed grave concern over the arrest, emphasizing that it undermines the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The union demanded Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release, warning that his detention sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the very fabric of the labour movement.
Osifo urged the federal government to prioritize engagement and dialogue over coercion and intimidation, stressing that the labour movement has always advocated for peaceful resolution of disputes.
The TUC reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers, urging the government to respect the rule of law and democratic norms.
The NLC also alerted its members and affiliates to be vigilant and prepared for any eventuality, describing Ajaero’s arrest as a “brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation”.
