  • Egbetokun said that the entry and exit points of the state would be secured with the military support.
  • The Edo state governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has forbidden the Edo State Security Network, a state-run security force, from participating in the upcoming gubernatorial elections.

The IGP’s directive comes just before the Edo state governorship election, set for September 21, 2024.

The police chief also revealed that a massive security force of 43,000 personnel, comprising police, military, and other security agents, will be deployed for the election.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stakeholders meeting in Benin, the state capital, Egbetokun emphasized that ensuring the safety of voters and electoral materials is the sole responsibility of the Police.

He added that the police will receive backup from other security agencies to guarantee a free and fair election. “No private or state-owned security apparatus would be allowed to operate during and after the election,” the IGP said.

“All quasi-security operatives in Edo State should refrain from participating in Edo election. Activities of Edo State Security Network which has been suspended remain suspended.”

“35,000 Police officers have been deployed for the election while 8,000 security agents drawn from other national agencies will support the Police.”

Egbetokun also stated that the state’s entry and exit points will be secured with military assistance.

Speaking further, Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, assured that the electoral commission will maintain its commitment to professionalism throughout the process.

Yakubu confirmed that the commission is fully prepared to conduct the election, having made arrangements for the transportation of election materials.
