  • Mr. Mas’ud Ya’u states that filling a 65-liter CNG cylinder costs N3,500, enabling a car to travel from Abuja to Kaduna
  • He emphasizes CNG’s cost-effectiveness over petrol, which would cost approximately N17,940 for the same distance, improving engine performance

An expert in compressed natural gas (CNG), Mr Mas’ud Ya’u, revealed that it costs just N3,500 to fill a 65-litre water capacity CNG cylinder, which is sufficient to drive a car from Abuja to Kaduna, a distance of about 191 kilometres. Mr. Ya’u, who manages ABG Conversion Centre, Dawaki, one of the government-approved CNG conversion centers in Abuja, made this statement during an inspection tour by the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGi).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ya’u spoke when the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGi) undertook an inspection tour and distributed CNG conversion kits to six centres in Abuja.

In an interview with newsmen after the inspection of his centre, Ya’u said: “CNG is safe, as the gas tank is fire and bulletproofed, and the thickness of the tank is between 15mm and 20mm.

“65 litres water capacity of CNG will cover 170km to 200km distance, which means it can conveniently take you from Abuja to Kaduna.

“To fill CNG of 65 litres water capacity will cost N3,500,” he said.

He highlighted the cost-effectiveness of CNG compared to petrol, which would cost approximately N17,940 to cover the same distance at the current pump price of N897 per liter in Abuja. In addition, Ya’u noted that CNG improves engine performance and extends the intervals between servicing, from three to five months after conversion.

“The process involves installing the kits in the engine with gas cylinders in the vehicle’s trunk.

“We also conduct detailed inspections to determine if the car is standard enough for conversion,” he said.

CNG conversion involves installing kits in the engine and placing gas cylinders in the vehicle’s trunk, with centers like ABG converting up to four cars per day. The initiative is seen as a way to reduce fuel costs and lower the prices of goods and services across the country.
