  • The NCC raised concerns about the overwhelmed 5GHz and 2.4GHz frequency bands, prompting the exploration of additional spectrum for improved connectivity
  • The commission plans to harness the 6GHz band to enhance internet speed and capacity, supporting high-demand applications like virtual reality

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised concerns over the increasing strain on the 5GHz and 2.4GHz frequency bands currently used for Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 5) in the country. According to Dr. Aminu Maida, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, the surge in demand for internet capacity has overwhelmed these frequency bands, prompting the need to explore additional spectrum to enhance connectivity.

She spoke at a stakeholders’ consultative meeting in Lagos, Maida, represented by Engr. Abraham Oshadami, emphasized the importance of Wi-Fi in both home and enterprise settings.

“Most home internet traffic is connected to the end-user through Wi-Fi. In enterprise settings, Wi-Fi is essential for handling large amounts of data and connecting large numbers of devices with improved reliability, higher data throughput, and lower latencies.

“However, the 5GHz and 2.4GHz that are being used for Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 5) at the moment are becoming overwhelmed due to increased demand for capacity. It is, therefore, imperative to identify other frequency bands to complement the 5GHz and 2.4GHz”.
