  • Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, newly confirmed Chief Justice of Nigeria, pledged a strict zero-tolerance policy towards corruption in the judiciary
  • Kekere-Ekun emphasized leveraging technology to expedite justice and ensure the judiciary remains free from external influences during her tenure

The new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has vowed to uphold a strict zero-tolerance policy towards corruption during her tenure. She made this clear on Wednesday following her confirmation as the substantive CJN by the Senate.

In her remarks, Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted that pre-election cases would now be concluded at the Court of Appeal, adding, “I have zero tolerance for corruption.”

Her confirmation comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally requested the Senate’s approval. She has been acting CJN since August, after the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Justice Kekere-Ekun, accompanied by other Justices from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, arrived at the Senate chamber at 12:30 p.m. Her screening lasted for about two hours, during which senators asked her about potential judicial reforms.

She emphasized her commitment to leveraging technology to speed up the dispensation of justice across Nigeria and ensuring that the judiciary remains free from external influence.

Now officially the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second female to hold this prestigious position in the nation’s history.
