  • The Senate advanced a bill proposing the creation of a Mine Rangers Service to combat illegal mining activities nationwide
  • The specialized security outfit aims to safeguard mining operations, enforce regulations, and promote sustainable mining practices

On Thursday, the Senate proceeded with the second reading of a bill proposing the creation of a specialized security outfit to combat illegal mining activities in Nigeria.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Onawo (Nasarawa South), outlines the formation of the Mine Rangers Service, a specialized unit responsible for safeguarding mining operations. The unit would also enforce mining, environmental, and safety regulations while promoting sustainable mining practices.

During his presentation, Senator Onawo highlighted the security outfit’s importance in curbing illegal mining nationwide. The unit would investigate mining-related accidents and ensure compliance with mining laws.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) supported the bill, emphasizing that the security outfit would help Nigeria recover the $18.9 billion lost annually to illegal mining activities.
