  • Nigeria urged UN Member States to end prolonged conflicts causing civilian suffering, emphasizing the need for collective action and global peace
  • Chairman Nasir Kwarra highlighted the importance of addressing humanitarian crises and collaborating on solutions to poverty and climate change challenges

Nigeria has called on United Nations Member States to work towards ending prolonged and unnecessary conflicts that result in civilian casualties and suffering worldwide.

This appeal was made by Mr. Nasir Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), during the 79th Third Committee Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Kwarra emphasized the importance of collective action among Member States to promote global peace, unity, and security.

He highlighted that the UN’s foundation is based on inclusiveness, peace, sustainable development, and human rights. He condemned the ongoing humanitarian crises, particularly the devastating impact on women and children in conflict zones.

Kwarra also called for increased collaboration between UN Member States, UN agencies, and global partners to address multiple global crises, including poverty.

He stressed that the world’s complex challenges cannot be solved by any one nation alone.

He underscored the relevance of this year’s General Assembly theme, “Unity and Diversity for Advancing Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity, Everywhere and for All,” and pointed out the ongoing efforts required to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030.

Kwarra also spoke about climate change and the wide-ranging global crises, including humanitarian, economic, social, food, and climate-related challenges, which pose obstacles to social development policies.

He urged UN Member States to collaborate to create effective policies that ensure people’s self-sufficiency and protection from poverty.

In discussing Nigeria’s progress, Kwarra reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring that vulnerable populations are prioritized in national programs and frameworks, with the aim of building a robust and competitive economy.
