The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the immediate reversal of the recent increase in the price of petrol to N1,030.

NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), in a statement on Saturday, criticised the government’s decision, highlighting a lack of transparent consultation with key stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector.

“We call on the government to reverse this increase and urgently implement measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices,” Osigwe said. He urged the government to invest in local refining capacity, improve public transportation, reduce taxes for low-income earners, repair public roads, and enhance security for farmers. Additionally, he advocated for a transparent fuel pricing mechanism and broader policies aimed at reducing poverty.

In a similar vein, the Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) condemned the petrol price hike, describing it as exacerbating the economic hardship faced by Nigerians. FOSAD President Dr Stephen Nwala, in a statement, warned that the increase had worsened poverty and placed additional strain on businesses and households.

“The timing of this price increase is detrimental, as Nigerians are still grappling with the economic fallout from fuel subsidy removal, rising inflation, and unemployment,” Nwala said. He called on the Federal Government to reverse the hike and explore alternative measures to address the country’s economic challenges, emphasising the need to prioritise the welfare of the most vulnerable citizens.
