  • Oguejiofor had flown from Thailand to Lagos via Doha, where he spent two days before arriving in Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 29-year-old man, Oguejiofor Nnaemeka Simonpeter, for attempting to smuggle 13.30 kilograms of heroin, valued at over N3.192 billion, into Nigeria.

The suspect, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, was apprehended on October 7, 2024, at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

According to the NDLEA, Oguejiofor had concealed the illicit drugs in six backpacks, which were packed into two large suitcases.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media & Advocacy, said in a statement that Oguejiofor had flown from Thailand to Lagos via Doha, where he spent two days before arriving in Nigeria. His luggage, however, was initially routed to Accra, Ghana, before he requested it to be rerouted to Lagos in an attempt to evade detection.

“NDLEA officers intercepted him at the exit point, and a search of his two suitcases revealed six backpacks containing large parcels of heroin,” Babafemi said. The total weight of the recovered drugs was 13.30 kilograms.

The suspect reportedly confessed that he had been hired for $7,000 to deliver two parcels in Lagos and four in Accra, Ghana.
