  • Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as Manchester United’s global ambassador after INEOS terminated his contract as part of cost-cutting measures
  • Ferguson, who has served as an ambassador since 2013, will remain a non-executive director at the club following his departure

Manchester United’s legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will step down from his role as a global ambassador for the club, following the termination of his multi-million-pound contract by part-owners INEOS.

Ferguson has been a regular presence in the Old Trafford director’s box since retiring in 2013 and has served as a club ambassador for over a decade.

According to a club source, Ferguson’s contract with United, worth £2.16 million ($2.82 million) annually, will end amicably. The source explained that Ferguson, now 82, is stepping back from several demanding roles but remains welcome at the club.

This move is part of broader cost-cutting measures at Manchester United, which has been facing financial losses. Ferguson will officially step down from his ambassadorial duties at the end of the current season.

Ferguson, who retired from management in 2013, led United to an astonishing 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League victories.

Meanwhile, the club is struggling on the field, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League standings after finishing a disappointing eighth last season.

United has not met expectations despite spending over £200 million on new players before the season. Since Erik ten Hag took charge in 2022, the club has invested approximately £600 million in player transfers, but results have remained inconsistent.
