Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has credited improved electricity supply with reducing public complaints about rising petrol prices.
Speaking at the 2024 Nigeria Energy Exhibition in Lagos, Adelabu said better power access has lessened reliance on petrol for generators.
“People don’t need to buy as much petrol for power. If they did, the outcry would be much louder,” he said.
Adelabu also discussed Lagos state’s plan to replace 1 million generators within a year and expressed concerns over the slow progress in boosting power generation, which currently averages 5,000MW.
He projected the Nigerian power industry could generate N2 trillion in revenue by 2024, doubling this year’s figure. Additionally, the government is addressing legacy debts of over N1.3 trillion owed to power companies, with initiatives like a $750 million World Bank scheme aimed at expanding electricity access.
