The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to investigate the petrol tanker explosion that claimed over 120 lives in Jigawa State.

Heineken Lokpobiri, minister of state petroleum resources (oil), issued the directive on Wednesday.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lokpobiri said the incident highlighted the urgency of ongoing collaborations with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance safety standards.

“Only a few days ago, I emphasized the importance of safety in petroleum product transportation during discussions with the FRSC Corps Marshall,” the minister said.

“This incident underscores the urgency of that collaboration.

“Therefore, I have immediately directed the NMDPRA to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.”

Lokpobiri also admonished the public to avoid approaching petroleum-laden tankers involved in accidents, adding that the risks are fatal.

The minister implored the petroleum tanker drivers (PTD) and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to work closely with the FRSC and NMDPRA to ensure that only certified, licenced drivers are employed to transport petroleum products.

Lokpobiri also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the injuries caused by the explosion.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, which claimed many lives, destroyed properties, and left several others injured,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating incident, and I pray for the swift recovery of those who are injured.”

On Tuesday, the Jigawa police command confirmed 90 fatalities from a petrol tanker explosion on the Kano-Hadejia expressway.

The command said the explosion injured 50 people, adding that most of the victims were trying to scoop petrol from the tanker after it tipped over
