The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has stated that the Federal Government is working diligently to prevent another strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
She explained that the various reforms and policies introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges at their root and providing long-term solutions.
Although the initial impact of these reforms may be difficult, Onyejeocha assured Nigerians that they would soon enjoy the lasting benefits.
Speaking during her 17th annual free medical outreach in Isuochi, Abia State, the Minister expressed optimism that the ongoing issues with ASUU would soon be resolved.
ASUU recently issued a 14-day ultimatum for the government to clear four months of salary arrears owed to members from the 2020 strike. The union also demands the removal of its members from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll System (IPPS), their migration to the University Transparency and Accountability System (UTAS), and the payment of earned allowances.
Onyejeocha further assured that the government remains in dialogue with Organised Labour to avert a nationwide strike, noting that discussions with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had been productive.
