Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, revealed that he donated over N200 million within one week to support education in various parts of Nigeria. He explained that this gesture aimed to secure a better future for the younger generation.

Obi shared this during the 70th Anniversary of Queens School Enugu, organized by the Queens School Old Girls Association (QSEOGA). He detailed his actions over the week:

• On Monday, he was in Onitsha, where a new university was being established.
• On Tuesday, he visited Anyigba in Kogi State to assist students.
• By Thursday, he was at an Almajiri School in Kaduna, addressing the needs of the students.

Obi emphasized the critical importance of education, stating that no country could succeed without prioritizing education. He believes investing in young people is crucial for keeping them away from crime and building a prosperous future.

As a former Governor of Anambra State, Obi stressed that a country’s success depends on its investments in both education and health. He also expressed disappointment at the state of Queens School Enugu, a once-celebrated institution that had fallen into neglect. Obi urged alumni and supporters to come together to rebuild the school rather than focusing on creating new ones.

Obi pledged to partner with the association to help restore the school’s glory.

In her remarks, Mrs. Ifeanyi Egbunike, the National President of QSEOGA, noted that many things had gone wrong at Queens School, particularly the lack of new structures. She praised Obi as a visionary leader and a strong advocate for education, explaining why he was chosen as the guest for the event.

Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, Chairperson of the Enugu Chapter of QSEOGA, highlighted the historical significance of Queens School Enugu, established on October 4, 1954. She added that the school had produced many notable professionals, including Prof. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Alumni from around the world had gathered for the 70th-anniversary celebration, with efforts underway to uplift the school.
