The Federal Government announced plans to reposition dams across Nigeria, highlighting that siltation has significantly reduced the water volume of the Ogwashi-Uku Dam in Delta State.

Abiola Oluwatosin, Deputy Director at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, revealed this during an inspection of the dam on Wednesday.

Oluwatosin, who leads a technical sub-committee tasked with evaluating dam infrastructure nationwide, stated that findings from their assessments would guide a comprehensive action plan.

The committee was established by President Bola Tinubu following recent floods in Maiduguri.

The inspection revealed that siltation has impacted the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, reducing its water capacity, though it remains functional. Mr Salin Ahmed, Managing Director of the Benin-Owena River Basin Authority, noted that the dam also includes a 1-megawatt hydropower component.
