Seventeen Nigerian women trafficked to Ghana have been rescued and returned to Nigeria, with five suspected traffickers arrested, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
The women, aged 18 to 29, were lured with false job promises and forced into exploitative conditions.
The rescue operation, coordinated by Ghana’s Anti-Human Trafficking Police with support from NIDO Ghana and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, is part of ongoing efforts that have repatriated 130 women from Ghana since July 2024.
NiDCOM Chair Abike Dabiri-Erewa praised the cooperation between Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities, crediting Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for supporting the operation.
The rescued women have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for rehabilitation. Two Nigerian men were also repatriated as part of the operation.
