  • The National Economic Council called for enhanced support and services for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to improve their livelihoods in Nigeria
  • The NEC emphasized the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure and basic services for both IDPs and host communities across Nigeria

The National Economic Council (NEC) has called for increased support and services for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria, highlighting the need to enhance basic services and economic opportunities for displaced populations.

Senator Abubakar Bagudu, Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, made this statement after the 145th NEC meeting in Abuja on Thursday, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

During the meeting, Hajara Ahmed, Project Coordinator, presented the “Solutions for Internally Displaced and Host Communities” program, supported by the World Bank. The program aims to:

  1. Expand Access to Basic Services: Improve essential services and economic opportunities for IDPs across impacted local governments.
  2. Invest in Resilient Infrastructure: Develop sustainable infrastructure for IDPs and host communities.
  3. Support Host Communities: Strengthen livelihoods in communities hosting IDPs, while also implementing national IDP policies.

Bagudu emphasized that IDPs and host communities need support to build sustainable livelihoods and encouraged state governments to show interest in the program. He suggested that each state designate a focal person to ensure communication and coordination with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
