The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has urged a unified effort to reduce the rising incidence of road accidents in Nigeria, particularly during the high-risk ’ember months.’

Speaking at a two-day workshop for FRSC management staff in Abuja, Mohammed highlighted the devastating impact of road crashes, especially on the youth.

He noted that road accidents are the leading cause of death among young people worldwide and in Nigeria, warning of significant losses if the trend is not addressed.

“Road traffic crashes are the number one cause of death among youths. If we don’t work together to reduce these incidents, we jeopardise our future,” Mohammed said, calling on all sectors, including government officials, engineers, vehicle manufacturers, and road users, to collaborate in making Nigeria’s roads safer.

The FRSC has launched a safety campaign titled “Retooling FRSC for Organisational Effectiveness from Policy Formulation to Strategic Implementation,” focusing on stricter law enforcement and raising public awareness.

ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, FRSC’s Public Education Officer, emphasised this year’s focus on passenger rights, encouraging them to voice concerns over reckless driving.

To broaden its reach, the FRSC has planned mega town hall meetings, motorcades, and transit camp stops, aiming to engage more road users directly and promote a culture of road safety across Nigeria.
