15 killed as locals clash with Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbi – Victims get mass burial

In Kebbi State, no fewer than 15 people have lost their lives in deadly attack on Mera community by the new terrorist group, Lakurawa.

The incident happened on Friday near Mera community in Augie Local Government Area of North-West State.

The new group allegedly has links to ISIS that operates in the Sahel.

According to a BBC Hausa report, matters came to a head after members of the Lakurawa terrorist group encountered a local herder and attempted to rustle his animals.

The herder reportedly ran to the community to raise alarm and members of the enclave mobilised to confront the terrorists.

In the ensuing violent clash between the locals and the armed non-state actors, 15 perosns were killed while many others sustained injuries.

“The herder ran to the community and raised alarm, and community members marched to the location where they engaged the terrorists in a fight whiçh led to the killing of 15, while many were injured.

“The locals succeeded in killing some of the terrorists, and injured others.

“But the survivors among the terrorists carried their casualties and left.

“The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State has paid a condolence visit on the people of Mera, and was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police and the Emir of Argungu,” the eyewitness said.

The fifteen persons killed in the clash have been given a mass burial.

The funeral prayer was attended by Deputy Governor, Umar Tafida, Commissioner of Police who led other security chiefs, and Emir of Argungu HRH Isma’ila Mera.

Tafida offered condolences and support to the bereaved families saying that the State Governor stands with them and will work closely with security agencies to prevent further incidents.

The Emir of Argungu on his part urged unity and resilience. He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure community safety.

The funeral prayer included prayers for peace and for the repose of the souls of the departed, with a commitment to strengthen regional security and stability.

The government further reassured citizens of ongoing efforts to protect lives and prevent future tragedies.
