  • The Niger Delta Youth Congress criticized former President Obasanjo for hypocrisy in calling for the removal of INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu
  • NDYC accused Obasanjo of undermining democracy, citing his controversial election history and attempts to secure a third-term presidency

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has strongly criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his call to remove the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

In a statement issued by NDYC’s National Coordinator, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, the group dismissed Obasanjo’s position as “hypocrisy disguised as patriotism.”

“Obasanjo, the architect of ‘do-or-die’ politics, presided over some of Nigeria’s most controversial elections,” the statement alleged. It further referenced Obasanjo’s notorious claim that even Jesus Christ could not conduct a free and fair election in Nigeria, describing it as a cynical outlook on democracy.

Uwejeyan also criticized Obasanjo’s leadership style, accusing him of intolerance toward dissent, disregard for justice, and a tendency to undermine the rule of law during his administration.

The group highlighted Obasanjo’s alleged attempt to secure a third-term presidency, an accusation he has repeatedly denied. The statement added, “His tenure was a case study in authoritarianism. ”

NDYC called on Nigerians to reject Obasanjo’s “antics” and instead focus on strengthening democratic institutions.

“The challenges we face today require unity and collaborative efforts, not divisive rhetoric from someone whose legacy is marked by contradictions and failures,” Uwejeyan concluded.
