  • President Tinubu called for reforms to the UN Security Council, advocating for Africa’s inclusion as a permanent member with full rights
  • He praised the G20 for granting permanent membership to the African Union, emphasizing the need for global collaboration against hunger and poverty

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for reforms to the United Nations Security Council to ensure its structure reflects global diversity and remains relevant in international interventions.

Speaking at the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to represent Africa as a permanent council member.

“The Security Council must expand its permanent and non-permanent member categories to mirror the world’s diversity and plurality,” he said through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.

Tinubu stressed that Africa deserves priority in reform, advocating for two permanent seats with full rights and responsibilities.

“Nigeria stands ready and willing to serve as Africa’s representative in this capacity,” he added, urging the G20 to champion the cause following its decision to admit the African Union as a permanent member.

Tinubu praised the G20 for granting permanent membership to the African Union, describing it as a forward-looking step toward multilateral reform.

He also commended Brazil’s Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, championed by President Luiz Lula da Silva, as a significant initiative to combat global challenges.

“This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil’s leadership in addressing urgent and persistent global issues,” Tinubu said. He highlighted the alliance as a comprehensive approach to eradicating hunger and poverty by addressing immediate needs and their structural causes.

Tinubu likened the global initiative to one of his administration’s priority areas, reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to adopting international best practices for economic growth.

This appeal for Africa’s increased representation and collaboration on pressing global issues reinforces Nigeria’s ambition to play a pivotal role on the world stage.
