The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has introduced a new initiative to enhance professionalism, hygiene, and service delivery at Nigerian airports.

As part of the plan, a team of Special Airport Marshals will conduct unscheduled inspections to ensure high standards and hold airport managers accountable. The initiative was announced in a statement by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, on Thursday.

The marshals will include representatives from the media, state governors, and non-governmental organisations. Their primary role will be to independently monitor airport staff conduct, assess hygiene conditions, and provide unbiased feedback on the overall passenger experience.

“Recognising the critical need for our airports to adhere to the highest standards of customer service and operational excellence, the Honourable Minister… has introduced new initiatives to address the expectations of the travelling public,” Moshood said.

Keyamo aims to reduce reliance on official reports from airport managers by incorporating observations from the marshals. This, he said, would create a more transparent layer of oversight and ensure airport managers, who receive monthly maintenance allocations, fulfil their duties effectively.

The minister also announced plans for nationwide monthly inspections of airports, led by senior officials, including himself, the Permanent Secretary, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and members of aviation committees from the National Assembly.

During these visits, Keyamo will personally engage in operational activities, address airport staff, and encourage professionalism. “He will listen to their concerns and emphasise the importance of courteous service to the public,” the statement added.

The initiative is expected to raise operational standards and meet the expectations of airport users across the country.
