Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the federal government’s dedication to advancing gender equity and empowering women through transformative policies.

Speaking at the H.I.D. Awolowo Foundation Webinar on Monday, Shettima stressed the critical role of women in fostering a balanced and inclusive society.

The event marked the 109th posthumous birthday of Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, the late wife of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“Every nation’s treatment of women reflects its level of civilization. We must recommit to building a society where women have dignity and equal opportunities,” Shettima stated.

He celebrated Chief Hannah Awolowo as a unique matriarch and a powerful advocate for women’s rights. Shettima acknowledged her contributions to Nigeria’s development and her role in supporting her husband while championing women’s empowerment.

Highlighting the history of women’s struggles for equality, Shettima honoured global pioneers like Susan B. Anthony and Nigerian icons such as Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Hajiya Gambo Sawaba.

He credited them with challenging systemic barriers and broadening discussions around workplace equality, reproductive rights, and combating domestic violence.

In her keynote speech, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed underscored the importance of November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

She emphasized the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Amina Mohammed also praised H.I.D. Awolowo for her dedication to social justice and her efforts to highlight women’s economic influence in Nigeria.

The event underscored the need for collective action to create an equitable society where women can thrive and lead.
