  • Femi Fani-Kayode praised the revamping of the Port Harcourt Refinery, criticizing Aliko Dangote for undermining Nigeria’s oil sector revitalization efforts
  • He emphasized that the oil business differs from commodity trading, urging collaboration between NNPCL and private sector players for success

Former Aviation Minister and APC chieftain Femi Fani-Kayode has commended the revamping of the Port Harcourt Refinery while taking a swipe at Aliko Dangote, the owner of the Dangote Refinery.

He emphasized that operating in the oil sector differs significantly from trading commodities like sugar, cement, and spaghetti.

In a post on his official X account, Fani-Kayode addressed criticism that the Port Harcourt Refinery blends rather than refines fresh petroleum products.

He accused certain private sector players in the oil and gas industry of attempting to undermine the refinery’s revitalization efforts.

He particularly referenced Dangote, insinuating that some private sector elements aim to discredit the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its Group Managing Director, Mele Kyari, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for their roles in reviving the refinery.

Fani-Kayode wrote, “The resurrection of the Port Harcourt Refinery is one of the most encouraging developments in Nigeria’s petroleum sector in years. Credit must go to President Tinubu and NNPCL’s GMD, Mele Kyari.”

He added, “The oil business is not like selling sugar, spaghetti, cement, or rice. You can’t create a monopoly on refined products as with other commodities. Let NNPCL’s refineries and the private sector thrive together.”

Fani-Kayode lauded Kyari’s leadership, describing him as tenacious and innovative while affirming that the refinery’s success signals renewed hope for Nigerians.

He urged optimism and collaboration for the nation’s progress, stating, “Every true supporter of Nigeria’s growth and President Tinubu’s agenda should celebrate this achievement.”
