President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for funding the UNESCO media and information literacy institute.
This development is aimed at swiftly operationalizing the institute.
Mohammed Idris, the information minister, made this announcement on Thursday during a meeting with Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO’s assistant director-general for communication and information.
Idris stated that the meeting took place in France, on the sidelines of President Tinubu’s visit.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been very supportive of the take-off process, and has approved the release of all funds required for the immediate operationalisation of the Institute, which will be located in the Federal Capital Territory.”
The minister expressed gratitude to UNESCO for the privilege of hosting a category 2 MIL institute, a unique honor globally.
In response, Jelassi conveyed his enthusiasm for the institute’s launch in Nigeria, stressing its significance in tackling global challenges such as misinformation and hate speech.
Jelassi emphasised the importance of promoting a safer internet environment, aligning with UNESCO’s key objectives.
He explained that UNESCO’s Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms aim to foster critical thinking, transparency, and freedom of expression.
The assistant director-general introduced Idris to the UNESCO MIL cities initiative, which seeks to integrate media and information literacy into urban planning globally.
