The Igala Youth Council has rejected any association with the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) proposal to include the Igala nation in a so-called “United States of Biafra.”

In a statement issued on Monday in Lokoja, Kogi State, the council condemned IPOB’s inclusion of the Igala people in their secessionist agenda without consultation or consent. The statement, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Michael Joshua, emphasised the Igala nation’s commitment to remaining within Nigeria.

“The Igala nation demands good governance for all its people within the Nigerian nation, rather than being dragged into IPOB’s madness,” the council declared.

The group criticised IPOB’s approach, noting the controversial nature of its activities, including the enforcement of a weekly ‘sit-at-home’ order, which has been widely condemned for disrupting economic activities and daily life in the Southeast.

While IPOB’s agitation has been framed by some as a legitimate call for self-determination, others see it as a threat to Nigeria’s unity.

The council urged Igala people worldwide to disregard IPOB’s claims and continue their lawful pursuits within the Nigerian state.
