The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed confidence that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will be released soon.

Kalu made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum, which included lawmakers from State Houses of Assembly in the region.

The Deputy Speaker revealed that high-level, behind-the-scenes discussions with relevant authorities are ongoing to secure Kanu’s release. “I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” he said.

Kanu, who is on trial for treason, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 following his arrest and extradition from Kenya.
