FG Allocates N27bn for Former Leaders’ Entitlements in 2025 Budget

The Federal Government has allocated N27bn for the entitlements of former presidents, vice-presidents, heads of state, chiefs of staff, retired heads of service, and professors in the 2025 fiscal year, according to Saturday PUNCH.

Beneficiaries include ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and ex-VPs Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, and Yemi Osinbajo.

Retired military leaders such as Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Gen. Ibrahim Babangida are also listed.

The allocation is part of the N49.70tn 2025 budget, presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly, which prioritises defence, infrastructure, and human capital development. The budget features a N13.39tn deficit, to be financed through borrowing.

Documents reveal that N2.3bn is earmarked for former presidents and vice-presidents, N10.5bn for retired heads of service, and N13.5bn for retired professors. Additionally, N46bn is allocated for civilian pensions, N383.9bn for military pensions, and N2.7bn for gratuity arrears from 2019 to 2021.

Pension arrears amount to N1.86bn, with N43bn allocated for security debarment allowances, covering arrears from 2017 to 2019. Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s focus on national security and infrastructure overhaul during the budget presentation.
