Night grazing, farming, mining, others banned in Plateau

The police in Plateau State have imposed a ban on night grazing and farming activities in the state.

The ban will take effect from December 23, 2024, to January 3, 2025, according to the State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina.

In a statement signed by the Command’s spokesman, DSP Alabo Alfred, on Friday, the Commissioner noted that the move was part of effort to ensure smooth and peace celebration during the yuletide season.

According to Alfred, the decision followed a series of engagements with stakeholders including council chairmen aimed.

Also prohibited are the late-night operation of beer parlours and night mining activities as well as the operation of commercial motorcycles.

The statement read, “The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, in a bid to ensure a hitch-free Christmas and New Year celebration, held a strategic security meeting with council chairmen of some local government areas of the state, yesterday at the command headquarters, here in Jos.”

The statement further explained that the meeting was convened as part of the commissioner’s proactive and strategic efforts to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebration throughout the State, especially in the following Local Government Areas; Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos and Mangu respectively.

It added, “The Plateau State Commissioner of Police has put in place effective security arrangements and made all necessary deployments to all the seventeen (17) local government areas to ensure that there are no threats to the peace currently being enjoyed in the state.

“After due consultation with his management team and critical stakeholders within the state, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police during a stakeholders meeting today has placed restrictions on the following activities from 23rd December 2024 to 3rd January 2025 in Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos, and Mangu Local Government Areas: night grazing by herders, night farming by farmers, late night operation of beer parlours, night mining activities and operation of commercial motorcycles (Okada).

“The CP also wishes to announce to the general public that there will be a ban on the activities of commercial tricycles also known as “Keke NAPEP” within the Jos Bukuru metropolis from 25th to 26th December 2024 and on the 1st of January, 2025. He also wishes to reiterate that the total ban on the activities of commercial motorcycles remains in force.”

The statement stressed that all these restrictions are to be in force between the hours of 6 pm to 6 am daily.

The statement further stated that the command had made massive deployments to major flashpoints within the state, and is also working in synergy with the military, other security agencies within the state and members of security help groups to ensure that the security of the State and Borders is guaranteed throughout the festive period

“The CP therefore calls on the good people of Plateau State to cooperate with the Police and other Security Agencies in ensuring that these restrictions are obeyed, for the good of all.

“The command regrets any inconveniences that these restrictions may cause on any person or group of persons.

“We want you to note that all of our policies are for the peace and security of all Plateau residents, and not meant to intimidate or inconvenience anyone”, the statement concluded
