  • Okupe has been expressing his support for Tinubu and his policies after the 2023 presidential election

A former presidential aide, Doyin Okupe, has said that he has never criticised President Bola Tinubu.

Okupe’s response came after an article incorrectly identified him as a former critic turned supporter of Tinubu.

During an interview with NAN, Okupe reminisced about his shared experiences with Tinubu during Nigeria’s military regime.

He noted that their time together in the “trenches” forged an unbreakable bond.

Okupe reiterated his long-held conviction that Tinubu possesses the requisite leadership qualities to excel as president.

“A thorough review of my statements during my tenure in the Labour Party and PDP will reveal that I have never uttered a word against Bola Tinubu,” Okupe emphasized.

Okupe credited his enduring connection with Tinubu to their collaborative efforts during the NADECO era.

“The shared struggles we endured created a lasting affinity, one that transcends partisan politics,” he said.

Contrary to his current stance, Okupe had in 2013 taken issue with Tinubu’s stance on the national conference proposed by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Okupe contended that Tinubu’s remarks failed to accurately represent the views of the majority of Yoruba people in the southwest.

Additionally, Okupe had criticized Tinubu’s comments regarding the subsidy reinvestment and empowerment programme (SURE-P), suggesting that Tinubu’s statements were misinformed.

Okupe’s recent political affiliations have undergone significant changes. He resigned from his position as director-general of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign council in December 2022 and formally left the LP in January 2024.

In the aftermath of the 2023 presidential election, Okupe has been vocal in his support for Tinubu and his administration’s policies.
