  • The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) reaffirmed that registering for the National Identification Number (NIN) is free of charge
  • NIMC urged the public to report extortion incidents at registration centers, emphasizing that no fees should be charged for NIN enrollment

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reaffirmed that registering for the National Identification Number (NIN) is free of charge.

This statement follows complaints from Nigerians about alleged extortion at various NIN registration centers across the country.

In a release on Sunday, the commission clarified that it neither charges fees nor permits its staff or Front End Partners (FEP) to demand payment for NIN enrollment.

“The commission does not charge or authorize any staff or Front End Partners (FEP) to charge applicants for NIN enrollment,” said Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications.

The statement further directed security agencies to monitor and act against any staff or FEPs found extorting applicants. Violators will face sanctions under the law, and offending FEPs will have their licenses revoked.

NIMC urged the public to report incidents of extortion. Complaints can be sent via email to customercare@nimc.gov.ng or by calling 0700-225-5646.

The commission assured citizens its commitment to providing smooth and efficient NIN registration services while addressing extortion concerns.
