  • The Christian Association of Nigeria urged the federal government to address food insecurity and strengthen agriculture to reduce food prices
  • CAN President Archbishop Okoh expressed sorrow over recent stampedes during charity events, highlighting the need for societal values like patience and empathy

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to address food insecurity, reduce food prices, and prioritize agriculture.

In his Christmas message on Wednesday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh urged Nigerians to reflect on Jesus Christ’s teachings, emphasising hope, peace, and compassion during difficult times.

Archbishop Okoh expressed sorrow over recent stampedes at charity events in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives.

He described these incidents as a reflection of growing desperation and a decline in societal values such as patience and orderliness.

“These heartbreaking events remind us of the urgent need to revisit the values that bind us together. Nigerians must embrace Christlike virtues like patience, empathy, and discipline to prevent such tragedies in the future,” he said.

Okoh praised the philanthropists involved in the charity events for their long-standing efforts to support the less privileged during Christmas.

However, he noted that this year’s tragedies underscore the need for better planning and societal change.

He highlighted food security as a critical issue, urging the government to strengthen the agricultural sector and make food more affordable. “Hunger and inequality are harsh realities many Nigerians face daily.

Our leaders must take decisive steps to address these challenges,” Okoh stated.

The CAN President also encouraged citizens to foster peace and orderliness in their communities, urging leaders to act compassionately to ensure every Nigerian’s basic needs are met.

“As we celebrate the birth of Christ, let this season inspire us to be agents of positive change. By embodying the teachings of Jesus, we can create a society rooted in love, patience, and care,” he concluded.
