The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned travelers against entering vehicles with subpar safety features.
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal, issued a statement through Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer, urging commuters to be cautious of reckless or intoxicated drivers.
Mohammed’s warning follows recent accidents in Jebba, Kwara State, and the Owo-Ikare route, highlighting the need for vigilance.
According to Mohammed, these crashes resulted from driver negligence and passengers’ failure to intervene, emphasizing the importance of reporting reckless drivers to the FRSC or other authorities.
He stated: “To minimize the risk of preventable crashes, commuters should exercise caution when boarding vehicles, be aware of their surroundings, and ensure their drivers are not under any influence.”
Mohammed stressed that road users’ safety is paramount, urging commuters to take responsibility for their well-being and support the Corps’ interventions.
He outlined passengers’ roles, including assessing drivers’ behavior and vehicles’ condition, checking tyres, brakes, and lighting systems.
By taking these precautions, Mohammed believes commuters can significantly reduce their risk of being involved in road crashes.
