  • The Senate announced that the ₦49.7 trillion budget for 2025 will likely not pass before January 31 due to necessary scrutiny
  • Budget defense by ministries will begin on January 7, with the joint committees expected to finalize and present the report by January 31

The Senate has announced that the passage of the ₦49.7 trillion budget for the 2025 fiscal year will likely not occur before January 31.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented the budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 18, urging lawmakers to expedite the approval process.

However, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, explained in a media briefing on Monday that the timeline for budget defense by ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) will begin on January 7.

He added that the joint Appropriations Committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to finalize and present the budget report on January 31.

“The joint committees will start meeting with MDAs on January 7, and the final report will be laid out on January 31,” Adaramodu confirmed.

The appropriation bill has passed its second reading in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Despite calls for a swift process, lawmakers emphasized the importance of thorough scrutiny before approval.
