The Federal Government has allocated ₦53 billion for the renovation of 103 foreign missions, covering chanceries, staff quarters, ambassadors’ residences, and official vehicles.

Allocations include ₦554 million for Abidjan, ₦812 million for Banjul, and ₦899 million for Niamey, among others. However, nearly $1 billion is reportedly needed to clear arrears and fully fund Nigeria’s 109 missions worldwide.

President Bola Tinubu, who recalled 83 ambassadors in 2023 to reassess foreign policy, has delayed appointing new envoys due to financial shortfalls. Many embassies are in disrepair, with staff facing unpaid allowances and expired rents.

Officials warned that deploying ambassadors without addressing these issues could hinder operations. The government is working to resolve funding gaps but faces significant challenges.
