President Bola Tinubu has said that state governors are vital to Nigeria’s prosperity, describing them as the “most important link”.

In a statement, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu tasked governors with leading Nigeria’s agricultural revolution and strengthening local government autonomy.

The president spoke during a New Year homage visit by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence.

“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development,” Tinubu said. “The Federal Government accounts for about 30 to 35 per cent of allocated revenue; the rest comes to you,” he stated.

Tinubu stressed the importance of federal-state collaboration on critical issues like food security and economic growth.

He called for unified efforts to boost agricultural productivity, urging governors to take pride in their progress.

“We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure our currency improves,” Tinubu said. “Nigeria will see prosperity with consistent effort.”

The president reaffirmed his commitment to local government development and autonomy, dispelling rumors of discord with governors.

“We will not fight; I will drive change,” Tinubu said. “You control local governments; restore hope by fulfilling people’s expectations.”

Tinubu reflected on his 19-month leadership journey, expressing confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to thrive.

He announced plans to visit Enugu state on January 4 to foster collaboration and witness developments.

Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, NGF chairman and Kwara governor, praised Tinubu’s agricultural initiatives, citing gains in food production and security.

“The policies are working,” Abdulrazaq said. “We’re encouraging ourselves to buy bumper stocks for the rainy day.”

The NGF chairman asked the president to visit states to witness development, pledging governors’ support for his administration’s vision.
