  • The governor noted that 2017 Resolution of the United Nations clearly stated that military operations have to be followed by stabilisation mechanism.
  • He, however, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for providing financial support.

Borno Governor Babagana Zulum has disclosed plans to shut down all internally displaced persons camps in the Bama area.

In 2021, Zulum began closing camps and resettling IDPs in Maiduguri.

During his visit to Darajamal, Zulum reaffirmed his commitment to closing all IDP camps before his tenure ends.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress of post-recovery projects for resettling survivors in Bama.

Zulum’s administration aims to resettle survivors in their ancestral homes, following the Kampala Convention.

“I earlier promised to close all IDPs before my tenure ends.”

“Fulfilling this promise, we started resettlement,” he said.

“God willing, we’ll close the Bama IDP camp in Maiduguri, a game-changer, as it’s unsustainable.”

Zulum sought the military’s support for resettlement efforts.

“I appeal to the Nigerian military to support our resettlement efforts.”

“We won’t allow sabotage of government intentions,” Zulum said.

He commended the military’s efforts, stressing that people shouldn’t be kept in IDP camps.

“Why keep 1,000 to 1,500 military personnel in a local government?”

Zulum praised President Bola Tinubu for providing financial support despite economic challenges.

“I commend the President for funding despite the low naira value.

“We’re utilizing federal government funds judiciously,” he said.
