The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) strongly opposed the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) plan to reduce its workforce by 1,000.
According to the group, this decision could worsen economic instability and deepen poverty nationwide.
Mohammed Salihu Danlami, the assembly’s speaker, highlighted the nation’s ongoing economic struggles as a critical factor. He pointed to challenges like the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, fluctuating oil prices, and security concerns as reasons why the layoffs are ill-timed.
He remarked, “The CBN’s decision, under these circumstances, is both unwise and unjustifiable. An institution safeguarding the nation’s financial stability should not contribute to economic hardship by laying off workers.”
The AYA described the move as a disservice to Nigerians, especially those in the northern region, and said it disregards the welfare of citizens.
Danlami emphasized that the layoffs would add to existing difficulties when the country is already facing severe economic pressures.
He also urged the CBN to ensure transparency by publishing a list of affected employees and their respective states.
Furthermore, Danlami insisted that the layoffs and recruitment processes adhere to Federal Character Principles to guarantee fair representation across all regions.
